‘High Street’ Car Seats
Some families may be able to find a solution to their children’s travel challenges in the mainstream market. Our therapists undertake training to be aware of the regulations in this country and to ensure that a child travels safely and within the law. This additional knowledge, combined with the clinical skills of both Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, ensures that they can highlight suitable ‘high street’ car seats that would meet the needs of a child, and ensure families are aware of any limitations too.
Specialist Car Seats and Harnesses
There are companies within the UK who distribute car seats that have been especially adapted or designed to meet the travel requirements of children with additional needs; there are also several harnesses sold in the UK to aid safe car travel for children and young people with disabilities. Our therapists have an in-depth knowledge of these specialist car seats and harnesses and work closely with the distributors to ensure that a solution that meets the exact needs of the child is recommended.
Vehicle Adaptation and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs)
When children do not legally need to travel in car seats, an alternative option may be adaptation to vehicles to make access and loading of bigger equipment easier. Some of these solutions are equivalent to options offered to adults; please see Passenger assessments for adults and children
