The national charity Driving Mobility, which accredits a network of driving and mobility assessment centres, will be exhibiting at Motability’s virtual ‘The Big Event’ on 6^th and 7^th August.

Free to attend, The Big Event from Motability will be online this year and provides a unique opportunity to discover the latest options for accessible driving and personal mobility. The event will showcase over 25 car manufacturers, 20 WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) and adaptation suppliers, and 10 powered wheelchair and mobility scooter manufacturers – all providing solutions available through the Motability leasing scheme. Motability provides the opportunity for people with restricted mobility to assign some of their Personal Independence Payments towards leasing of an adapted vehicle or scooter. Alongside manufacturers, the virtual event will also provide access to specialist speakers sessions, Motability advisors and specialists service providers such as Driving Mobility.

Supported by The Department for Transport, there are 21 Driving Mobility centres with over 70 outreach facilities across the UK. These centres include independent charities and NHS centres which offer professional information and assessment so disabled and elderly people can gain or retain independence. Clinical guidance, from Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors, provide recommendations regarding fitness to drive, vehicle adaptations, alternatives to driving and driving tuition. Details regarding these services and more will be available on the Driving Mobility stand at The Big Event.

There will also be the opportunity to put questions, about all aspects of adapted driving, to several Driving Mobility advisors who will be available on a live chat throughout the event. Teams from Derby DrivAbility and Birmingham’s Regional Driving Assessment Centre (RDAC) represented Driving Mobility at Motability’s ‘The Big Event’ on Friday 28 June and Saturday 29 June 2019.

‘The Big Event’ is Motability’s flagship event and the teams had a busy two days on the Driving Mobility stand.

Henna Zaman, Derby DrivAbility and Steve Dent, RDAC were ready and waiting to say hello to visitors on day one. They answered any questions visitors had about assessment centre services, driving assessments, modifications, adaptations, driving safety and vehicle loading. They also demonstrated the Ford C Max to visitors.

In addition to the stand activity Steve Dent, Assessment Manager, and Barbara Hutton, Occupational Therapist delivered talks on ‘advice and support available at driving assessment centres’ in the busy main Speaker Area.

The One Big Day programme of events will now take place in four locations across the country, offering disabled motorists and their families the chance to discover worry-free motoring.  The regional One Big Days are free to attend and offer visitors the chance to see a large display of vehicles for disabled people.

This year The Big Event is taking place at an exciting new venue, the NEC, Birmingham and Driving Mobility is delighted to be part of the new speaker sessions.

Come along to this flagship event to see the UK’s largest display of vehicles for disabled people and discover everything you need to know about worry-free motoring and accessible driving with the Motability Scheme. It’s free to attend, with free parking and everyone’s welcome!

For the first time ever, The Big Event welcomes a range of expert speakers to its event line-up. Between 10am and 3.30pm, guests will be able to attend several talks to find out more about the Motability Scheme. The talks will include top tips for visiting a dealer, more information on Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles and adaptations, and guest speakers from Driving Mobility, DMUK and Transport Focus. Each session will last approximately 20 minutes and the speaker will be available after the talk to ask any questions you may have on a one to one basis.

Driving Mobility is the national network of independent centres which deliver fitness to drive assessments with support from HM Government. They address all aspects of driving as well as passengers, transfer and specialist seating including for children. The network aims to bring the service to within a 30 mile or 1 hour journey of most of the UK population.
